Interviewer: What was your old approach [when writing songs]?
Marina: Well, it was like…
we’ve got our obsessions;
you never told me what it was that made you strong
and what it was that made you weak.
HAPPY BIRTHDAY MARINA! Another great year filled with your music, love and light has passed. We’ve laughed, we’ve cried, we’ve waited for Heartcore (when is that coming out by the way?) and you continue to amaze and inspire us every day. Thank you for putting into words what has been so hard to express my entire life. It’s as if you’ve reached into my head, pulled out all of my thoughts, feelings and expressions and put them on paper. It’s because of you and your music that I’ve had the opportunity of meeting and becoming friends with Diamonds from all over the world.
I had the pleasure of going to three of your shows over the past couple years and every show gets better and better. I’ve watched your fan base grow. You sold out shows. You toured with Coldplay and Katy Perry. You performed on Conan O’Brien. Your album went to #1. You played SNL. (Okay, that didn’t happen, but it WILL.) I’ve watched the line waiting for you after your show go from 30 people to 120 people. Your music is speaking to more people than ever before.
Thank you for inspiring me. Thank you for lifting me up when I felt down. Thank you for having a brilliant sense of humor (who else would have tweeted a link to a funny tumblr post someone created from their facial expressions?) Thank you for making me laugh. Thank you for making me cry. But most of all, thank you for being YOU. There’s no doubt that you are one of the most genuine artists out there today. You love your fans just as much as we love you. I will never forget being at one of your shows last year. You came to my side of the stage and looked up to the balcony where I was standing. I waved at you and without missing a beat, you smiled and waved back to me. Your smile was genuine. You were happy. The way you look at the audience and smile at the end of every song proves me to that you love what you do and that you love your fans. It is an honor to call myself a Diamond.
I’ll end this post with the same passage I ended with last year because it still rings true: I wish you all the best for the future. I don’t think you’ll need it though because let’s be real - you slay the fuck out of everyone anyway.
Now go on. Shoo.
